Notes From an Environmentalist; Plum Island Beach Walk Still on for today at 10. More thoughts on Massachusetts Energy Transitions.
Offshore Wind Turbines
Wits and Water, the New England Way
By mid-2024 Massachusetts will have its own source of abundant energy since New Bedford was the wealthiest city in the country based on hunting whales, certainly slaughtering far more marine wildlife than a few offshore windmills.
The petroleum era was no better. Billions of birds, fish, and mammals have been killed by oil spills and oil slicks covering the world’s oceans. To say nothing of being beholden to hostile foreign states like Saudi Arabia and Texas for our energy.
I also suspect more coyotes, deer, dogs, cats rabbits and squirrels are killed in a single night on Massachusetts roads than wildlife will killed by the Vineyard windmills.
There may be a future for fusion energy but it will take at least 20 years to be developed and another 20 to get permitted. The other problem with nukes is that you are using a massive amount of really expensive, potentially dangerous energy to do a relatively simple thing, boil water!
