Notes From an Environmentalist; Global Boiling (with snow!)
Global Boiling (with snow!);
Get Ready for a Bumpy Ride
I’ve spent the last few months trying to convince myself to be optimistic about climate change.
I’ve read, “Not the End of the World” and “How to be a climate optimist,” and it almost worked.
I wasn’t totally convinced that we could consume our way out of environmental crisis but I’m willing to give it a try. Drive an electric car, support mining lithium, cobalt and manganese for batteries and use less carbon emitting cement to rebuild our infrastructure.
Then along came one of those “unknown unknowns” that Donald Rumsfeld warned us about. But this time the “unknown unknown” was the news that scientists have seen a terrifying increase in ocean temperature that they didn’t expect and can’t explain.
So I went online to see what my fellow substackers are writing about the environment and discovered there is a whole new cadre of smart young scientists and journalists writing about the juxtaposition of political power, economics and the environment.
Just in time too. Polls come out yesterday that show that despite his legal troubles and malfeasance, Trump might just win this coming election. Great, we only had twelve years to forestall the worst effects of climate change and now we just lost four of them.
Hang on folks its going to be a bumpy ride.
